Chapter 8 -
Identity Theft
Lost ID Cards
A stolen purse or wallet can be a gold mine for
an identity thief. Not only can the thief use the credit cards for
purchases, driver’s licenses in some states use a person’s social
security number for the license number. Many people have their
social security number printed on their checks for convenience.
With a social security number and current address, a thief can
obtain credit in many places.
Dumpster Diving
When someone finishes balancing their
checkbook, their next action might be to file the bank statement or
simply toss it in the trash. Even if the individual files it, at
some point they will decide to discard old paperwork, perhaps as
part of a house cleaning in preparation for a move. Whenever
financial records like bank statements, phone bills, and credit card
bills are disposed, there is an inherent risk.
Many criminals have no compunctions about
digging through garbage and taking credit card statements, which
normally contain the name, address, card number and available credit
of the cardholder. This information can then be used to place
orders online.
A basic shredder for home use can be purchased
for a reasonable price. Shredding all documents before discarding
anything that contains private information is a smart way to protect
oneself from dumpster diving criminals seeking to separate people
from their hard-earned money.
