The Problem of the Wireless
Web
The proliferation of wireless technology has
opened an entirely new way for hackers to perform anonymous
attacks. Simply driving through a neighborhood with a laptop
running and within a few minutes someone’s home wireless network
will be found to be open and ready for use.
A large section of Chapter 9 is devoted to this
issue. For now, suffice to say that until people start getting sued
for allowing open wireless connections, it is very easy to launch an
anonymous web attack.
The following is a real-world case that
happened in 2004.
Real World Case: Website Hacking
Just to show that no one is exempt, this
incident involved someone who is considered a technology expert.
While the experience left him feeling violated and abused, he
acknowledges that he learned a great deal about the underworld of
web criminals. This individual decided to use a service for his
website. He assumed that the web hosting service would plug all
security holes and protect his websites against foreign invaders.
The user was shocked one morning to get an
early call saying, “I think you’ve been hacked. Just take a look at
your home page and you will see!”
Well, this technology expert went to his home
page and saw an image, roughly like this, where a profanity was
added to the header on more than 3,000 web pages:
