Chapter 5 -
All About Cybercrime
Real-World Case: The Rootkit Attack
This attack had disclosed the entire database of confidential
information to an unknown party! In this case, the company lost its
entire database to a competitor and went out-of-business within a
month.
Web Privacy Legislation
The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act is very
specific about penalties for anyone who enters a web server without
consent. Section 1030, Fraud and Related Activity in Connection
with Computers, makes it a serious crime to break into a website.
How serious is it, really? It is shocking to
discover just how impaired law enforcement officials are, especially
in light of the fact that most hack attacks cannot be prosecuted
because of:
Because of these issues, local, state and FBI
enforcement officials will only investigate hack attacks that result
in financial losses that exceed $100,000. Even then, they are often
unsuccessful because of the right of juveniles and the lack of
cooperation in foreign lands.
Additionally, the ease at which someone can
enter the web anonymously is incredible. For example, at a midtown
Manhattan hotel in 2004, it was possible to access 8 wireless
routers, none of which required any user ID or password. This was
accomplished in less than 5 minutes! Had the individual that
accessed these routers had malicious intent, it would have been
possible to hack a website or start a virus and no one would have
known the identity of the perpetrator.
