The Loose-Cannon Story
Who hasn’t encountered the IT professional
who is known as the proverbial “loose-cannon”? Take, for example, an
employee who could not focus on any one item for any length of time
before her mind would wander off onto something else. This scenario
even played out in the middle of conversations. Anyone conversing
with her would continually have to pull the individual back to the
original conversation and repeat questions that weren’t answered
before the subject changed.
Her work was just as disorganized as her
thought patterns. Plans or checklists were never compiled for work
assignments and follow up documentation was a struggle to extract.
This lack of organization and planning
caused tasks to be lost through the cracks and mistakes to be made
in implementation. Many times it was suggested that she slow down
and take more time to think the process through, and document the
process and plan. Unfortunately she was never able to focus her
efforts in a productive way and she ended up quitting her job when
she realized she was about to be canned.
