Chapter 1 -
The Illusion of Anonymity
Dealing with confidential data on the web
Figure 1.2 – Real time audit analysis
Many websites that contain confidential
financial or personal data have built-in alarms that sound when
there is an attempted breech or an unauthorized data access. This
will immediately alert the Webmaster or Security Administrator to
the attempted intrusions.
In today’s litigious society, almost every
breech of privacy and security is followed by expensive litigation.
On the issue of medical records privacy, the situation is even more
fluid and prone to severe security lapses. HIPAA addresses this
problem by mandating the audit requirements of these records and
strictly enforcing the requirements by placing stiff penalties for
non-compliance.
In cases where personal information has been
improperly disclosed, the courts have become very severe.
Litigation against Internet domain owners with ineffective,
“home-grown” auditing solutions can be devastating. In almost every
court case, the security and auditing code is found wanting, and the
victims often win huge cash judgments.
Figure 1.3 – Unified Audit Reporting
Interface
Using the Unified Audit Reporting Interface
displayed in Figure 1.3, every line of code is put under a
magnifying glass and security experts from around the world are
called in to judge the quality of the data privacy solution.
