Chapter 1 -
The Illusion of Anonymity
Real-world case: The Shaeffer Murder
In 1986, the television show My Sister Sam introduced the public to
an up-and-coming young actress named Rebecca Shaeffer. Though
relatively unknown before landing the role, the success of the show
seemed certain to launch Rebecca into a promising career as a
television star. Her ambitions, however, were cut short when on
July 18, 1989, Robert John Bardo showed up at the front door of
Rebecca’s home and shot her. He’d been stalking the young actress.
After failing to get any information from Rebecca’s agent, he paid a
private investigator $250 for her address. Unfortunately, it was
that simple.
The ease at which anyone can obtain a private address is staggering.
In California, the local DMV office will provide a private home
address for only one dollar! All that is required is a short form
with the requestor’s name, the subject’s name, and a reason for
requesting the information.
The next section delves deeper into the issues surrounding data
disclosure.
