Chapter 8 -
Identity Theft
Identity Theft
Identity thieves do not discriminate based on
wealth.
Identify theft is not always about draining the
victim’s bank account. Sometimes, when accused of a crime or simply
receiving a traffic ticket, the identity thief poses as the person
from whom they stole an identity to law enforcement personnel. This
deception may remain undetected until the victim is arrested for
failure to appear in court or their vehicle’s insurance premium goes
up due to a traffic ticket of which they had no knowledge.
Many people do not consider themselves wealthy,
and they are, in fact, living paycheck-to-paycheck. It is a common
misconception that low or moderate income exempts one from identity
theft. Sadly, many criminals could take a meager credit score and
use it to finance a new automobile at an exorbitant interest rate,
drive it off the lot and never make a single payment. Everyone
needs to be cautious with his or her personal data.
Physical Identity Theft
Recently, there have been more stories in the
media about identity theft, but it is nothing new, nor does the
Internet cause it. Criminals have invented many ways to steal from
working people since the very first checking account was opened.
This section presents some ways that low-tech criminals can still
steal an individual’s identity or resources.
