Chapter 7 -
Internet Scams
Real World Case: Internet Consumer Scams
“I got tired of waiting for Mr. Smith promises
so I sued him. I won my case. What do I do next? Does anyone know?”
“I to have been caught out. I authored an ebook
@ www.chrisxxx.com, I entered into an agreement for Oraclexxxxxx.com
to resell but low and behold, he is doing his utmost not to pay me
(dragging on for over 8 months to date). I am taking legal action in
a few weeks. If you have purchased my ebooks from Mr. Smith from
June 2004 onwards, please email me.”
He immediately stopped producing courseware for
this fellow and found that Mr. Smith did not intend to pay for the
products that were delivered to him. He went to court and won a
judgment against Mr. Smith and is still waiting for compensation
from this judgment.
The next example is a continuation of this
story and one of a more subtle form of consumer scam, the deceptive
advertising angle.
The DBLearning Site Scam
Alerted to a web site by a fellow professional,
the business owner was asked if he had ever heard of an individual
named on the site. The website was flashy and advertised a database
expert that he had never heard of. It all sounded very convincing.
He did some quick checking and discovered:
-
This alleged database expert had no industry
articles or contact information and the photo appears to be a stock
photo of a model.
-
The address on the site was a phony suite mail
forwarding service.
-
The web site administrative contact was the
same person who owed the business owner money from a previous
judgment.
There was also more information on the web
about people claiming to have been scammed:
