Chapter 1 -
The Illusion of Anonymity
Genealogy Websites
Another location for personal information is
web sites designed to help would-be researchers piece together
family histories. Whatever the reason for researching ancestors,
there are many tools available that make the task easier than it has
been in the past. Many local and regional government agencies make
various public records available on the Internet. Some charge a fee
and others are free. Genealogy.com and ancestry.com
are two web-based services that operate as information
clearinghouses. These information clearinghouses easily extend a
search over a wider area than would be possible by manually going to
each state or county website and performing searches separately.
The Social Security Death Index, or SSDI,
offers a way to search for deceased persons that participated in the
Social Security program. The results include social security
numbers. This provides an easy way for a deceased individual’s
social security information being used for fraudulent purposes.
Indeed, a deceased person’s social security number was used by a
criminal to register voters for a presidential election.
As the next chapter will demonstrate, criminals
can use social security numbers to engage in many types of
destructive and illegal activity, including identity theft.
All about Anyone:
Just a Mouse-Click Away
Many people know that Google.com is a
popular and effective search engine. It is so popular in fact, that
Google has become a verb. The verb Google is frequently used
as a synonym for search. For example, instead of asking someone if
they searched for the address of a restaurant on the Internet, one
might ask, “Did you google that restaurant?”
