Managing Workspaces

The second main function of the Administrators area is to manage the Workspaces which are used in the system.  A workspace is an area where applications can be developed.  Database schemas are associated with a workspace as well as users.  Lastly, a workspace is assigned some storage space in the database in which to save data.  The interface can manage each of the workspaces.

The Manage Workspaces area can be accessed by clicking on the Manage Workspaces icon shown in Figure 15.1.

Actions that can be performed here are explained in Table 15.1.  Some of the actions are self-explanatory and will not be covered in detail.

ACTION

DESCRIPTION

Create Workspace

Used to create a new workspace.

Existing Workspaces

List and view all the workspaces in the system.

Workspace Details

View the details of a workspace.

Remove Workspaces

Removal of a workspace.

Manage Workspace to Schema Assignments

Management of the schemas which are assigned to a workspace.

Manage Developers and Users

Management of the developers and users of a workspace.

Import Workspace

Used to import a workspace file that has been generated by the Export Workspace function.

Export Workspace

Used to export the definition of the workspace as well as users in the workspace.  It will not create database schemas or objects.

Creating a Workspace

This function is used to manually create a workspace.  Also, the schema for the workspace can be defined as well an administrator for the workspace.

1.       To create a workspace, click on the Create Workspace link.

2.       On the Create Workspace page, fill in the name of the workspace.  Optionally a description of the workspace can be given.  Click on Next.

3.       On the next page, the schema and storage requirements will be given.  If a schema already exists to be used, choose YES to re-use an existing schema.  For the Schema Name, supply the name for the existing schema to re-use or the name of the new schema.  This will become an actual user in the database.  Next, provide the password for that schema.

The Space Quota for the workspace is also specified here.  There are only four choices available:  Small (2 MBs); Medium (5 MBs); Large (50 MBs); or Very Large (100 MBs).  The amount can be augmented later, if needed.

4.       The next page in the wizard is where the administrator for the workspace is given.  This is a user who can administer the particular workspace through the developers interface.  See the Managing Workspaces section later in this chapter.

5.       This next page is the confirmation page where a summary of the choices are provided.  Create the Workspace by clicking on the Create button.

The workspace, workspace administrator, and space will be created at this point.
