Disk I/O Tuning
Chapter 2: IEEE1394
Protocol Layers
The
IEEE1394 interface is a three layer protocol stack. The three layers
include:
-
Transaction
Layer
-- Implements the request/response protocol.
-
Link Layer
-- responsible for getting data on and off the cable, error
detection and correction, retransmission, cycle control for
isosynchronous transfer, supply of the awk datagram to the
transaction layer.
-
Physical Layer
-- provides initialization and arbitration services. This layer
provides for electrical signaling, mechanical connectors and
cabling, the arbitration mechanisms, the serial coding and decoding,
and transfer speed detection.
These layers are
sandwiched between the Serial API above the transactional layer and
the IEEE1394 physical interface below the physical layer. The three
layers and the serial API communicate to the computers serial bus
interface. The architecture for the IEEE1394 interface is shown in
Figure 2-4.
