Disk I/O Tuning
Chapter 2:
Disk
Interfaces
- Serial ATA:
Often abbreviated SATA or S-ATA, it is an evolution of the
Parallel ATA interface. Serial ATA is a serial link -- a single
cable with a minimum of four wires used to create a
point-to-point connection between devices. Transfer rates for
Serial ATA begin at 150Mbps. One of the main design advantages
of Serial ATA is that it has thinner serial cables that
facilitate more efficient airflow inside a form factor and also
allow for smaller chassis designs. In contrast, IDE cables used
in parallel ATA systems are bulkier than Serial ATA cables and
can only extend to 40cm long, while Serial ATA cables can extend
up to one meter.
Serial ATA supports all modern ATA and ATAPI devices (ATAPI is short
for Attachment Packet Interface, an extension to EIDE (also called
ATA-2) that enables the interface to support CD-ROM players and tape
drives. The major limitation to SATA is that it only supports one
device per cable. The differences between ATA and SATA are shown in
the following diagram. Essentially ATA allows two devices per ATA
connector that are configured in a standard Master-Slave setup,
while SATA only allows a single device per connector. ATA allows up
to 66 Mbits/sec per connector while SATA allows 150.
